Jorma Panula is one of the most successful of Finland's music pedagogues. He has trained the current generation of conductors, who are coaching many of the orchestras of Finland. Some of his students are even conducting a couple of the internationally leading orchestras. Lecturer Rauno Tikkanen from Savonia Polytechnic is a student of Panula. While participating in Maestro Panula's international conducting masterclasses, he understood that the effort could be achieved at his institution, with the help of Kuopio Music Centre, the Kuopio Philharmonic Orchestra and his own ensemble E5.
The Net Communication Department of Virtuosi - International Centre of Chamber Music in Kuhmo, develops methods of promoting, documenting and analyzing music net education. After three years of research and development, the undertaking has developed into a scheme which significantly improves the impact of the costly effort. Video technology can add considerable value to the benefit of the participating group of students.
Briefly described, the process contains the following elements: The student has prepared a piece a which he rehearses with the orchestra. Meanwhile, Panula supports the student with gestures, visual, verbal and sometimes even onomatopoetic comments. The core of the teaching takes, however, place in a classroom after the day's rehearsals. While screening the video of the conductor student Maestro Panula gives personal advice through intimate and detailed instructions.
This page gives on-demand access for the students to their study material. The research and development project aims at developing virtual campus services within the framework of Finnish information society construction. Your email comments on the on-going development work are warmly welcomed.
This documentation wouldn't have been possible without the voluntary contribution of a number of friendly parties. Our warm thanks go to Maestro Jorma Panula. Apart from giving his vital pedagogical output, Panula didn't fail to support the recording process by giving it his continuous attention. Our partners, the Savonia Polytechnic and the E5 Orchestra who were professionally behind the event also deserve an applause for making the whole event possible.
